GradeBook for MIT (Cambridge, MA)

Overview

In April 2011 I was hired by MIT as a consultant to develop The MIT Gradebook. The application is currently in development and provides online management of grades for assignments and exams.

The Gradebook performs weighted calculations for these grades, display cumulative scores, and create a private Grade Report for each student. In addition to creating assignments in the gradebook, graders (such as professors or TAs) can also import assignments from an existing web apps into the Gradebook. This means users can enter all grades for online and offline submissions in one location, and Gradebook can perform grade calculations for all class submissions and exams.

This is a HEAVY JavaScript / jQuery / HTML5 / CSS3 web application and uses the latest advanced technological methods to communicate with data layers such as JSON data.

The development work is near completion and expected to trigger traffic in a large scale of university sectors. Soon, I will be working on developing a native iPhone / iPad version of MIT Gradebook.

Will keep you posted.

MERL, Inc.

Overview

This was an in-house Patent / Employee Management System. I worked on this project independently according to organization requirements.

After analyzing the older system, I proposed the re-engineering method as a solution to enhance the previous system architecture. While it is a great challenge to extract business rules from reading an old code and interviewing organizational people, I felt comfortable understanding all business rules correctly, finding dependencies in all functionalities.

The approaches I used were: analyzing the old system, understanding the old system architecture and developing a strategy for mining and reusing existing assets. This solution satisfied the business needs and enhanced the performance and efficiency of the system.

In addition, I designed and developed an administration and a content management modules to manage user accounts, groups and permissions. Please watch the video to understand how some of those features work.

The employee' TimeSheets module was developed using a company's formula based on employee' date of birth, seniority and years of service.

The unique Gantt Chart Editor was designed and developed to allow scientific departments quickly produce reports based on the approval concept and electronic submissions to management.

Maxhow.com

Overview

This was a big and exciting project! What would you like to learn how to do? Would you like to know how to re-wire a lamp? Change a tire? Make a martini drink? Or tie a tie?

While developing the Maxhow.com website I wanted to bring together the personality of user-generated content with informative and free how-to videos to consumers. Whatever you have a question; I know that there is someone out there who has personal or professional experience in that area.

I designed this website to offer visitors informative, engaging videos on a wide array of topics. With high quality and compelling video content, MaxHow.com opened new opportunities for viewers, video producers and business advertisers. The site also has a rapidly growing library of articles created by their members.

Personally, I love sharing my knowledge with the world and have created a platform for users to share their knowledge.

I invite you to become a MaxHow.com member, where you will be able to comment on information, interact with other members, write your own articles and publish how-to videos.

CheapInmateCalls.com

Overview

CheapInmateCalls.com was stated to assist inmates' families and friends to lower the exorbitant telephone charges they incurred. The website offers fast activation, prep-pay funding, and full service account maintenance.

CheapInmateCalls.com is leading the way in innovative local presence solutions. Unlike other companies, who charge per-call or monthly fees, this company only charge users ones per year. The processing platform, system and expertise provides users with calling solutions that reduces the financial obligation of staying in touch with the people who are important to them. With one time pre-pay funding, there are no suprising or expensive phone bills to pay at the end of the month.

CheapInmateCalls.com can help to shrink the financial burden of accepting collect calls from inmates.

The project also involved creating a video, which was quite a time consuming process so I shared the load with a fellow and talented video designer, Pavel Tumaev who did a great job!. The video was used within both the site design and hosted on YouTube.

This was an great project to work on, and the site developed and grew from its initial idea to the final design you see today. The site and the business model is currently for SALE.

Feedback

"I worked with Vadim over this sufficiently large project. Vadim knows exactly what he needs and explains it quite well - not every person can do that. Makes very detailed comments, listens to advices and open to new ideas. If possible, I would be glad to work with Vadim again and again with pleasure. Good luck!

Overview

David is and was my accountant for years. I was approached by him to take on the development of his company website.

This was a very exciting prospect of my research and was fairly easy to design, develop and implement.

The Initial layout design went through a few variations before a direction was reached, but from then on it was all about getting the website built and ready for a launch. The final week was spent refining and making sure we were ready to go, and then all on time the website went live.

This was an extremely satisfying project to work on.

Client Feedback

"I could not be happier with the work that Vadim Shilman produced for my business. He delivered exactly what I wanted and made the whole process very easy for me."

Overview

I was approached by Irina to design a personalized website. She asked to build a website and to be up and running in quite a small timescale, the total project time for this build was 2 weeks. This incorporated a couple of photoshoots to help promote her portfolio she offered.

Initially a couple of designs were created, and then from here a few color and layout variations on the decided direction. Macromedia Flash was used to create a front page animation with fading effects and the online gallery was also formatted with some more advanced styling techniques to keep in fitting with the feel of the website.

Client Feedback

"Many thanks for designing my website! I am very impressed with the design, and many people have commented on my website layout, thereby serving the purpose of accessibility.."

Aleph Interactive, Inc.

Overview

Aleph Interactive, Inc is my own company. I have personally produced web sites and developed software for clients in the past, but has recently moved on to consulting on bigger projects for small and larger corporations.

Due to rapid development in recent months and idea brain storming, Aleph Interactive has outgrown the original purpose. Currently, we are developing a new site with a list of our services.

What will the new site include? While we don't want to give it all away pre-launch, you may have already noticed a new logo and color scheme. The style of this page represents the design direction that the new site will be taking. Of course, the final design may not look exactly like this, after all, we're still working on it, but at least this page may give you some idea.

The company employs intelligent project management principles and a five-stage interative process to ensure that the delivered project meets client needs and is completed on time.
