Public Computer Queue
Overview
The Public Computer Queue & Time Limit Manager software provides a convenient and reliable method to implement custom Usage Policies for public access computers, such as those currently deployed in public libraries.
The software provides all necessary infrastructure to display a Usage Policy on each computer screen, to require and obtain patron's digital assent to the Usage Policy prior to computer access, to enforce computer session time, to effect an orderly closing of all previous session applications, and to return to the Usage Policy display for the next patron.
The administration module of this product provides a remote observation of computer use. Librarian's computer controller will display the status of every public access computer. This status includes which computers are in-use, idle, or off-line. Librarian's can view screen shots, end sessions, and send messages reminding particular patrons of appropriate use.
The client software which runs on each patrons computer displays an unobtrusive countdown timer on each public access computer indicating the time that the patron has remaining before all of their programs are automatically closed and the machine is prepared for the next user. At two intervals shortly before the session is to end, the patrons are given a prominent on-screen notice that their applications will soon be closed.
The automated talking queue directs patrons to the next available computer, which can also automatically stop computer use at, or prior to, library closing time. Please watch the demonstration video to understand this product functionality.
I initially developed a simplified version of this product for Boston Public Library (HubPilot) using VB6/MSSQL and recently rewrote this software from scratch using the VB.NET and MySQL.
Client Feedback
" I worked with Vadim Shilman for nearly eight years, first at the Boston Public Library and then at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Without the slightest hesitation I enthusiastically recommend Mr. Shilman. He is not only smart but an extremely clever and dogmatic problem solver. Most significantly, though, I believe that his greatest strength lies in a rare combination of astute technical, logical computer programming skills coupled with an artistic, creative design and problem-solving sensibility. On top of that, I have always known Mr. Shilman to be a professional, mature, personable, reasonable, and generous team player in his approach to his work and his fellow colleagues. "
Joseph M. Fisher - Database Management Librarian
"His contribution to all areas of Library activity in which he has been involved have been much appreciated. He has brought many skills to his position as well as eagerness to learn more and constantly improve his skills. I believe that Vadim Shilman will make a valuable addition to any organization that he may join. Bright, dedicated and skilled, Vadim garners my unequivocal recommendation and I would recommend him without hesitation."
Henry Bernasconi - BPL Network Services Manager
"While in the position of Chief Information Officer at Boston Public Library, I hired Vadim Shilman for the position of Programming Manager. I always found Vadim's work to be outstanding. He often went above and beyond what was called for him, suggesting improvements and enhancements to the requirements where he saw to be beneficial. If the problems did arise, he was quick to remedy them. I was proud to have hired Vadim and would do so again if the opportunity arose."
